A diverse coalition of Hackney based groups and individuals that have come together to challenge social exclusion and promote social justice.

Our members include trade unionists, faith groups, BME community and migrant support groups as well as peace activists. We welcome any organisation or individual that wants to join us in our campaigning.

Community groups, voluntary organisations, campaigners and artists came together on June 5th for a one day event organised by Hackney Unites to showcase the diversity of Hackney.

Part community conference, part local short film-festival and arts show-case the event was held at Stoke Newington Media School and attracted over 400 individuals and some 30 community groups.

Our Workers Advice Project aims to tackle bad employers and bad employment practice in the borough.

We work with trade unionists, community groups and lawyers to provide advice on how to challenge unlawful and poor employment practices.

'The Community Census' - this explores the issues that concern us, the people of Hackney (those who live or work in the borough), and asks how we can achieve our shared aspirations.

Who was CLR James?
CLR James was an academic, a playwright, an author, a pan-African, and an activist in so many spheres, as an organiser of share-croppers in the USA, as a Marxist theoretician, as advisor to both Kwame Nkrumah in Ghana and Eric Williams in the Caribbean. He was also the founder of the Race Today collective in Brixton an organisation which nurtured Darcus Howe and Linton Kwesi Johnson. He was for many years the Guardian cricket correspondent, he was also jailed in Ellis Island in New York as dangerous subversive. His life is simply too rich to explain in a few sentences, suffice to say he is an internationally known figure and the move to remove his name from our library has offended people of goodwill from around the world. When the library was named after him, it was a clear statement about how Hackney perceived itself. The decision to remove his name, not only risks consigning his legacy to history, but also suggests that some people in Hackney do not think he is the sort of figure we should be celebrating.

We are determined to prove them wrong and are backing the campaign launched by Hackney BEMA to keep the name.

We have been completely inundated by local people making films about Hackney and their lives here. We are currently putting together a programme of films which we hope will lead to a series of discussions about our experiences of living in Hackney.

Hackney Unites ‘one’ fund - Can you afford £1 per month?

Hackney Unites is bringing people together with the aim of identifying positive steps that can be taken to benefit our communities.

Hackney Unites hopes to create a space where people come together and decide to do something positive for our communities.

We have been very fortunate to obtain some start-up funding both from the Trades Union Congress and from the Barry Amiel and Norman Melburn Trust, we have also been supported by the Searchlight Educational Trust. While this money has been essential we recognise that in the long-run, a community organisation has to raise money from within the community.

We are therefore launching a ‘one’ fund. Will you donate £1 per month by standing order? We have a target of 500 people donating £1 a month.

This money will provide us with the ability to hire meeting rooms, reimburse volunteers expenses, print leaflets, pay a phone bill and co-ordinate volunteers. We have deliberately set the amount we are asking at a rate that almost everyone in Hackney can afford; one pound.

London-wide anti-BNP mobilisation: Saturday 17 April

Hackney Unites is joining forces with the HOPE not hate campaign to put on a coach to take people in Hackney to Barking & Dagenham for a crucial 17 April mobilisation. This is the borough where the BNP are already the official opposition and where, if left unchecked, they are in a position to become the majority party. On this one day we hope to have enough activists to deliver a HOPE not hate newspaper to every property in the borough.
With the real threat of the BNP winning control of the council it is vital that all anti-fascists and anti-racists make the trip to Barking & Dagenham on this day. The effect of the BNP and their politics of hatred controlling a multi-million pound budget of a London borough would be poisonous.
Our coach is leaving Mare Street, by Hackney Town Hall, at 9.45am on Saturday 17 April.

Capital Clean-Up Carnival - May 15

The 2010 Capital Clean-up Campaign shall be launched on the 15th of May with a waste and recycling themed family-event carnival! Come join us for this fun filled event!

In addition to a special celebrity guest, soon to be revealed, there will be:
• Solar powered music stage with local bands
• Interactive workshop zone with recycled sculptures and gardens
• Food stalls including Indian, Caribbean, Cakes and Pastries
• Competitions and prizes
• Drumming parades, children’s entertainers and dancing

The Capital Clean-Up Carnival will take place in Graham Street Park in Islington, which neighbours City Road Basin and Regents Canal.

The event will be wheelchair accessible, and BSL sign language interpreters and induction loops will be available.

About us...

On Tuesday 20 October 2009, twelve people from different parts of Hackney’s diverse communities met to discuss and share their concerns.

Those present represented trade unionists, faith groups, BME community and migrant support groups as well as peace activists.

We decided to form an alliance: Hackney Unites a coalition for social justice, so that we could undertake some tasks that were dear to our hearts.

Over the next 12 months we plan to:
Stop the BNP
Mobilize the thousands of Hackney residents, who despise the racist politics of the BNP, to become a powerhouse of the national anti-BNP campaign in advance of the May 2010 elections. Working with the national organisation Searchlight, we plan to have a distribution depot staffed by volunteers to distribute anti-BNP materials and to staff a phone bank to counter their lies and agitation. We will be twinning with Barking and Dagenham where the BNP are within grasp of gaining control of the council with a view to building an anti-racist mood which sweeps them from power.

Celebrate our communities
Convene a community conference using the ‘social forum’ model.
We are not just anti-racist, we are pro the diversity of Hackney’s communities. We want to bring people together from different faiths, backgrounds, politics and beliefs in a relaxed atmosphere and take time to share our experiences and aspirations. We hope to have community stalls and information, debates and discussions as well as performances that showcase our community’s cultures. We will certainly have range of food and drink and one thing we guarantee, the day will be relaxed, informative and fun.

Create a Workers Advice Centre
We are working with trade unionists, employment lawyers and community activists with a view to opening a workers advice centre. We won’t charge for the advice, but as this is a community initiative we will expect people to ‘put in’ as well as ‘take out’. Those who come for advice will be offered the opportunity to attend a training course on employment rights, the role of trade unions, and ‘leadership skills’. We hope that we can equip people, not just with knowledge of their minimum legal rights, but the skills and knowledge to be able to assert them.

Initially the project will be run just one evening a month, but if successful we hope to grow this to a permanent organizing project, such that we can eradicate sweatshop conditions from Hackney.

We have an agreed constitution with democratic structures which put ordinary members in the driving seat. we also have a management committee responsible for finance and meeting the organisation's legal obligations.

Celebrate Hackney Festival - June 5th 2010 - Save the date & get involved!

Plans for Celebrate Hackney! our community festival are progressing well and we are keen to involve as many groups active in Hackney as possible. The event is open to community, faith, political and trade union groups as well as organisations that deliver services in the borough

The event will:

Celebrate Hackney’s diversity and its community organisations
Increase the knowledge of what Hackney’s communities have to offer
Share learning about issues and ways of working
Provide a forum for discussion and debate about key issues that affect residents and workers of Hackney
Identify key community issues around which people feel there is benefit in working together to affect change.

The event

This will be a one day event that will take place on June 5th 2010 at Stoke Newington School & Sixth Form: Media Arts and Science College, Clissold Road, London N16 9EX

The event will be participative and the agenda set by the community groups participating.

Stoke Newington School has a large hall for plenary sessions and class-rooms that can be used for workshops. All classrooms have OHPs. There is the capacity for around 30 stalls.

Audience

This event is for:

Individuals and families from Hackney who want to learn more about the community organisations and services available.
Local community and voluntary organisations
People who wish to celebrate the communities of Hackney

We anticipate individual participation will be in the region of 200 people.

Programme and Activities

Programme development will be informed by the community groups that indicate they want to be involved.

The programme needs to:

Give a voice to the community groups participating
Strengthen relations between community groups
Create awareness of all that Hackney has to offer
At the last count 17 groups had contacted us about stalls and participation. Groups are as diverse as CND, Hackney’s Refugee and Migrant Support Group, the Hackney Council for Voluntary Services, the Hackney Law Centre, Hackney TUC, a school and the local Quakers.

Meanwhile the suggested discussions include the Olympic legacy, youth issues, including police stop and search, a workplace advice session and issues for older people. There will also be a discussion from the Open University who wish to run a ‘return to learn’ session which will link in with the Union Learn presentation.

We also hope to have a series of performances by arts groups linked to the borough.

We have set the deadline of March 29th for groups to book stalls and propose workshops. If your group wants to have a stall at this event then please *download our booking form*. Group registration costs £20 and entitles you to a stall, the opportunity to suggest a workshop or other session and a feature in the 8 page tabloid newspaper which will be used to pre-publicise the event.

If your group cannot attend for any reason, but would still like to indicate its support for this cross community initiative, please let us know.

Contribute to our Tabloid

Hackney Unites is convening a 'community conference' on June 2010. We hope and expect to have about 30 different groups from the borough's diverse communities present, including faith, community and campaign groups.

As part of the pre-publicity we intend to produce an eight page tabloid style newspaper in late April early May, designed to highlight some of the issues in Hackney and publicise
the event itself.

We have funding for publishing 50,000 of these, and have the network of volunteers to see them distributed door-to-door.

Our current thinking is that the tabloid would contain an agenda for the conference as well as a discussion about how groups and communities in the borough can benefit from working together. We would then expect a series of short news articles about what some of the many voluntary sector groups in the borough are doing, and perhaps some interviews with key activists..

We already have interest from the local Youth Parliament as well as the University of the Third Age, from the local rugby club, and a range of faith, community, campaign and minority ethnic groups. So the day will be fun and exciting.

We already have a coordinator/editor, but what we could really do with is some students of journalism prepared to help both in terms of designing the concept of the paper and in meeting Hackney based groups and writing articles about them.

The session began with a collective discussion of rights at work, led by Arpita Dutt (an employment solicitors) and Wilf Sullivan (TUC race equality officer).

The discussion was simultaneously interpreted to allow full participation of Turkish and Kurdish speakers. Arpita and Wilf answered a broad range of questions on issues such as contractual rights, and attending a disciplinary hearing.

Following the collective discussion there was time for individual one-to-one advice provided by both lawyers and union organisers.

Overall the day was a great success, and Hackney Unites are looking to work with other community groups to spread the word about employment rights, how to assert them and the roles of trades unions. We are also working on developing a formal employment rights training course.
